Matthew Chapter 12

Jesus and his posse are heading through corn on the Sabbath, and everyone was hungry so they began to pluck corn and eat it.  Those pesky Pharisees saw them doing this, and said hey now folks, it’s the Sabbath, you know the rules.  JC asks them if they read bout David did when he was hungry?  How he entered god’s hous and ate the  bread, which was not illegal for him to eat, only the for priests.

Or have you read the law about how the priests can work on Sabbath without any blame?  Well this place is greater than the temples.  If you had known what I meant you would not have condemned us, we are guiltless. The Son of man is Lord even on the Sabbath.

When Jesus departed he went to their synagogue.  There was a man with a withered hand.   So they try to set up a trap for JC asking him if it’s lawful to heal on the Sabbath.  Just so they could accuse him.

Jesus responded by asking them if their only sheep fell into a pit on the Sabbath who wouldn’t help it out of a pit. Is a man better than a sheep?  It’s lawful to do well on the Sabbath.  He told the man to stretch his hand out, and grew to be whole, just like the other one.

The Pharisees, decided to hold a council, and figure out how to destroy JC.

But Jesus saw what they were up to.  He went outside where tons of people followed him, and he healed them all, but told them not to talk about it.  So the prophesy of Esaias could be fulfilled.

He said here is my beloved servant who pleases my soul, my spirit will be upon him, and he will judge the Gentiles.  He won’t struggle or cry, and you won’t hear his voice in the street.  A bruised reed won’t break and smoking flax won’t be put out until the judgment and… wait for it…. victory!

So they brought him a man possessed with a devil who was both blind and dumb and JC healed him so he could speak and see.  No mention about whether the devil was cast out.  But all the people were amazed, saying this guy has got to be the son of David!

The Pharisees were a bit more skeptical to say the least.  They said, yeah he can cast out devils, by the power of Beelzebub, Prince of devils!   But JC knew what they were thinking, and told them things like every kingdom divided will fall, a city or house divided won’t stand.  How can Satan cast out Satan, if he’s divided against himself how will his kingdom stand?  If I’m casting out these devil with Beelzebub, who are your children casting them out with?  They’ll be you’re judges! Wait… what?  How are those two things connected?  But if I’m casting out devil’s with god’s spirit, the kingdom of god is here.

How else are you going to enter a strong man’s house and spoil his stuff unless you bind the strong man?  And then spoil his house.  So you are binding the devil to spoil his house?  And thanks for the breaking and entering tips.  I mean you’ll be lucky if the Pharisees, don’t call you on that, you know since they think you’re in league with the devil.

If you aren’t with me you are against me, and if you don’t come with me you will be scattered abroad.  All sins, and blasphemy will be forgiven of man, except if you are blasphemous about the Holy Ghost (oh snap, see my notes on Matthew Chapter 1).   If you speak against me you will forgive, but not about the Holy Ghost, not in this world or the next.

A tree is either a good tree with good fruit or is a corrupt tree with corrupt fruit, a tree is known by it’s fruit.  You vipers, how can you being evil, say nice things, we speak from the heart!  A good man with a good heart brings good things, a evil man with an evil heart brings evil things.  But I’m telling you, you will be judged for all of your words!  And by these words you will be justified or condemned.  Uh oh.

Some of the scribes and Pharisees asked Master, we’d like to see a sign from you.  JC answered, an evil and adulterous generation wants’ to see a sign?  I’m not giving you a sign, except the sign of the prophet Jonas.  Jonas spent three days and nights in the belly of whale, and I’ll spend three days and night in the heart of the earth. Kids we call this forshadowing.

The men of Nineveh will rise in judgment of this generation and condemn it, because they had repented at Jonas’s  teaching, and look I’m bigger that Jonas!  And the Queen of the south will rise up with this generation and condemn it because she came to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and I’m better than he was too!  Wow I hate to say it but JC seems a little full of himself right there.

When the unclean spirit leaves a man, he walks through dry place looking to rest but finding no place to rest.  So he says I’ll go back to my house but he finds it empty.   Then he goes and takes seven spirits who are even more wicked than he is and there, and this last state of the man is even worse than the first state.  That’s how this wicked generation is. Um... okay.

As JC was talking his mother and siblings, stood outside hoping to talk to him.  When someone told him this he asked Who is my mother?  Dude, she’s the one that birthed you, and nurtured you, and brought you up so you can be this super prophet that we see now.  Let’s give her a little credit here.  Who are my siblings?  Then he stretched out his hand toward his disciples and said “Behold my mother and my siblings”.  Whoever does my father’s Heavenly work is my mother, brother and sister.

Wow.  Poor Mary, what a lot in life, I hope her other kids were nice to her.

  1. Yeah, I was real thrilled with how JC treated his mom. What a jerk. Also, I guess in Mark it was ambiguous about whether it was illegal for David and/or the priests to eat the temple bread. I thought it was illegal for everyone, but Matthew makes that more clear. So, my question is, why can JC and David chow down but the priests aren't allowed?
