John Chapter 16

John Chapter 16

JC says that he told them all the stuff from the last chapter so they wouldn’t be offended because they’re going to all be kicked out of the synagogue and whoever ends up killing them is going to think that they’re doing what God wants.

They only do this because they still don’t know JC and his papa. But, he’s letting them know that when the time comes they should remember everything he’s said right from the beginning.

But, now he has to go back to see his dad and none of them should ask where he’s off to. Ohhhhhh, but because he’s talked to them about all this they were all sad. But, it’s the truth, JC can’t help it, it’s better for them if he leaves. The Comforter won’t come to them unless he goes to heaven and sends him.

When the Comforter does come, he will reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment. Why, you ask?

1. Of sin- because the people don’t believe in JC
2. Of righteousness- because JC goes to his dad and they won’t see him any more
3. Of judgment- because the prince of this world is judged

Clear as mud? Excellent, moving on.

JC’s told his disciples lots of thing, but they couldn’t carry out all of them at the moment. Not to worry though, when the Spirit of truth comes he’ll guide them all into all possible truth. The Spirit of truth doesn’t speak for himself, but whatever he hears, he says and he’ll show you things to come (oooo, he’ll predict the future! Scary!!)

The Spirit will glorify JC because he’ll receive some things from him and show them to the disciples. All things that JC’s dad has are his, so that’s why he’s saying that the Spirit will take some of his things and show them to the disciples.

You won’t see JC for a little while (yeah, so he keeps telling us, but he doesn’t seem to be getting a move on), and blah blah, he’s going to see his dad, in case you forgot from the billions of the other mentions of this important fact.

Well, the oh so brilliant disciples are once again confused, why did he say “a little while”? Does that mean JC won’t be gone long? (Well, geniuses… let’s see what old Jesus has to say).

Jesus tells them that even though they’ll be sad it will all be turned to joy… oh great, he’s going to give his opinion on birth…. Just like went a woman is suffering in labor, but when she has the child she can’t remember any of the pain (yeah, I’m sure), “for joy that a man is born into the world” (I’ll let that line stand on it’s own merit and will make every effort to refrain from comment).

He repeats himself about everyone being sad now and happy later, also about how when they ask his dad for things name dropping the big JC, they’ll get what they want.

The time is coming that he will speak plainly to them of the Father. When he does… ugh, more ask-in-my-name talk… well, apparently JC’s dad will listen not because JC prays, but because since JC loves them so does his dad. He repeats how he came from his paps and is returning to him.

All his disciples agree that they believe in him and all that.

He tells them the hour has come that they will be scattered, each on their own, but JC won’t be alone, he’ll have his dad.

He’s told them these things so that they can have peace even though when they’re out in the world it will be hard. No worries, JC has overcome the world. (How, just incredibly comforting).

Ughhh…. Only Chapters 17-21 to go. I don’t know if I’ll make it, but I’m sure going to try! John is killing me… just killing me!!!!!!

  1. Yes indeed, that is all about as clear as mud. And I keep thinking about the great comforter as a really sincere blanket that will snuggle the world.

I'm thinking it's kind of cold comfort to know you are going to be killed because someone else thinks god wants them to do it. In fact I would be really annoyed by that.
