John Chapter 17
Jesus lifted his eyes up to his Father in heaven and said that his hour had come, glorify your son so your son can glorify you. As you’ve given him power over all flesh so that he can give eternal life to as many as you have given him. And this eternal life is a gift for knowing who the true go is and who Jesus Christ is. JC tells his dad that he’s glorified him on Earth and has finished the work that he was given to do (I’m sorry… DID he finish it at this point… what exactly was the mission here, to find twelve believers???).
He asks his dad again to glorify him (I’m not sure about all this vanity, should he really need to be glorified). He tells his papi that he has introduced himself to man and they have believed and kept god’s word. JC gave them this word and yeah, they received it and believed it and all kinds of good stuff.
JC continues talking to his dad about how he prayed, not for the world, but only for the believers (nice). “And all mine are thine, and thine are mine”, (I like that line because of it’s reflective quality), and this glorifies them both.
He goes on and on about leaving the world, but it’s okay because of his precious believers who are his and god’s and god’s and his and so on and so on. He’s so awesome because he did exactly what his daddy told him to and he didn’t lose a single sheep except for the ones that were basically already lost. He tells his dad that he speaks all these things so his followers can be joyous.
He’s given his dad’s word to his followers but the world hated them because his disciples are not of this world, just like JC isn’t. He doesn’t want his dad to take them out of the world, but only to keep them from evil. He repeats that they are not of the world and neither is he.
Sanctify them through your word, dad, because that’s truth, JC says. He tells his dad that just as he was sent into the world so he sends his followers. He doesn’t pray just for them though, but also for any additional believers who might spring up. He wants all of them to be as one, just like his dad and him. He gave the glory that his dad gave him to his disciples so they can all be one. He expounds for a while on the idea of “one-ness”.
He talks a bit more about how much his dad loves him and for how long. He goes on again about how he’s the only one who really knows his daddy. And finally concludes that as he has stated many many times the love god has for him, he has for his disciples.
Woo hoo… these chapters are a whole lot of talk and very little action.

Luke Chapter 17
JC tells his disciples, it’s impossible… but offenses will come. Woe to the one who they come through! It would be better if he had a millstone were hanging around his neck, and he cast them into the sea, rather than he should offend the little ones. What? Who are “the little ones” ? Beware, if your brother, trespasses against you, rebuke him, and if he repents forgive him. Even if he trespasses against you seven times a day, and repents seven times a day, you should forgive him. I don’t know JC it doesn’t seem like this guy is learning anything from his repentance. The apostles must have had their doubts about that one too because they tell JC, Lord, Increase our faith.
The Lord said, if you had as much faith as a mustard seed, you might say to the sycamine tree move itself into the ocean and it would obey you.
Would you tell your servant after he was done feeding the cattle or plowing the field to go and sit down for a meal? Wouldn’t you rather tell him, get my super ready, dress me, and serve me… after that you can eat and drink? Do you thank the servant for doing what you commanded? (If you are polite you do) I trow not, which means I trust not. Which again these folks should reconsider they way they handle work morale. So when you do as you’ve been commanded to do, say that you are unprofitable servants and you have only done your duty. I completely disagree with whole thing, first of course you should let your servant eat when he’s been working all day in the fields, and you should thank him! It’s fine for you to need no thanks but it’s always better to offer it. Good job teaching people to be jerks JC!
On the Jerusalem, through Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a certain village he met ten lepers standing way off to the side. They cried out Jesus, Master, have mercy on us! He told them to go show themselves to the priest, so they did and they were clean. One of them when he saw that he was heeled came back and glorified god in a loud voice. He was a Samaritan, and he fell face first at his feet and gave JC thanks. JC asked him if the other nine were clean and where were they? Well this guy was the only one to give glory to god and come back. JC told him get up his faith had made him whole. Yay!
The Pharisees being an inquisitive lot demand that JC tell them when the kingdom of God would be coming. And he told them, it won’t come with observation. They won’t say oh look It’s here or there, because actually it’s within you. JC you just blew my mind with that one. Because I still have no idea what the kingdom of God is.
He told his disciples, the day will come when you will want to see one of the days of the son of man and you won’t see. They will tell you, see it here, or there or follow me, or don’t follow me. Tricky huh? It will be like lightning, shining to the other part, under heaven, that’s how the Son of man will be in his day. Like the incredibly deadly force of nature we call lightning. Awesome.
It’s just like the days of Noe, that’s how it will be in the day of the Son of man. JC I must ask for the hundredth time, aren’t you the son of man and aren’t these day that you are talking about actually happening to these people as you speak. Well back to the days of Noe, when they ate, drank and were married, until the day that noe entered the ark and flood came and destroyed them all. Well Luke, buddy, how does Joseph’s lineage start from Adam, and yet not include Noe if everyone was killed during the flood. Oh don’t think that I forgot about that!
Same thing happened in the days of Lot, they ate, drank, bought, and sold, planted and built. But the same day that Lot left Sodom it rained fire an brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. That’s how it will be when the Son of man is revealed. Revealed to whom? Are you or are you not the Son of man!
That day if you are up on the housetop and your stuff is in the house don’t go in and get it. The the ones in the field, don’t let them return. Remember Lot’s wife. In case you forgot, Lot’s wife was turned into a pillar of salt, because she didn’t listen when she had been told not to look back at Sodom.
Whoever tries to save his life with lose it, and whoever loses their life will keep it. I tell you that night will be two men in one bed and one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding together (okay that sounded dirty) and one will be taken and one will be left. Two men will be in the field, one will be taken and one will be left.
The disciples asked him where Lord? And he told them wherever the body is the eagles will be gathered.
Why did they ask where? Where what? Sigh. I don’t know about all of this gloom and doom.

John Chapter 16
John Chapter 16
JC says that he told them all the stuff from the last chapter so they wouldn’t be offended because they’re going to all be kicked out of the synagogue and whoever ends up killing them is going to think that they’re doing what God wants.
They only do this because they still don’t know JC and his papa. But, he’s letting them know that when the time comes they should remember everything he’s said right from the beginning.
But, now he has to go back to see his dad and none of them should ask where he’s off to. Ohhhhhh, but because he’s talked to them about all this they were all sad. But, it’s the truth, JC can’t help it, it’s better for them if he leaves. The Comforter won’t come to them unless he goes to heaven and sends him.
When the Comforter does come, he will reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment. Why, you ask?
1. Of sin- because the people don’t believe in JC
2. Of righteousness- because JC goes to his dad and they won’t see him any more
3. Of judgment- because the prince of this world is judged
Clear as mud? Excellent, moving on.
JC’s told his disciples lots of thing, but they couldn’t carry out all of them at the moment. Not to worry though, when the Spirit of truth comes he’ll guide them all into all possible truth. The Spirit of truth doesn’t speak for himself, but whatever he hears, he says and he’ll show you things to come (oooo, he’ll predict the future! Scary!!)
The Spirit will glorify JC because he’ll receive some things from him and show them to the disciples. All things that JC’s dad has are his, so that’s why he’s saying that the Spirit will take some of his things and show them to the disciples.
You won’t see JC for a little while (yeah, so he keeps telling us, but he doesn’t seem to be getting a move on), and blah blah, he’s going to see his dad, in case you forgot from the billions of the other mentions of this important fact.
Well, the oh so brilliant disciples are once again confused, why did he say “a little while”? Does that mean JC won’t be gone long? (Well, geniuses… let’s see what old Jesus has to say).
Jesus tells them that even though they’ll be sad it will all be turned to joy… oh great, he’s going to give his opinion on birth…. Just like went a woman is suffering in labor, but when she has the child she can’t remember any of the pain (yeah, I’m sure), “for joy that a man is born into the world” (I’ll let that line stand on it’s own merit and will make every effort to refrain from comment).
He repeats himself about everyone being sad now and happy later, also about how when they ask his dad for things name dropping the big JC, they’ll get what they want.
The time is coming that he will speak plainly to them of the Father. When he does… ugh, more ask-in-my-name talk… well, apparently JC’s dad will listen not because JC prays, but because since JC loves them so does his dad. He repeats how he came from his paps and is returning to him.
All his disciples agree that they believe in him and all that.
He tells them the hour has come that they will be scattered, each on their own, but JC won’t be alone, he’ll have his dad.
He’s told them these things so that they can have peace even though when they’re out in the world it will be hard. No worries, JC has overcome the world. (How, just incredibly comforting).
Ughhh…. Only Chapters 17-21 to go. I don’t know if I’ll make it, but I’m sure going to try! John is killing me… just killing me!!!!!!

Luke Chaper 16
JC tells his disciples… another parable! Hey wait, is anyone else thinking what I’m thinking? Parables were actually a secret bible drinking game! I mean you have a shot every time JC tells a parable! Or in John where there are less probable, you drink every time JC talks about his relationship with his daddy! Wait a second let me poor myself a shot.
There was a certain rich man. And I’m going to pause again here, because you could have a separate drinking game for every time Luke mentions “a certain” anything. It is his biggest writing crutch. So there was a certain rich man, who had a steward. Hold on a second, I get a little chatty when I drink, and two shots without getting through the first sentence, well kids this is going to be a long post! Have you ever noticed that JC’s parables generally involve rich people with servants? I guess it makes sense because we are all supposed be gods servants but… I’d like to see a bit more directed towards interactions between the common man. So there was a certain rich man, with a steward who he accused of wasting his goods. He called him over and started yelling at him, telling him to give him the account of what happened to these goods or he will be steward not longer.
The steward didn’t know what so do, if he wasn’t a steward, he couldn’t dig, and he was ashamed to beg. Knowing his time as steward might be ending soon he decided to ingratiate himself into some of the other houses that the lord did business with. So he went out to the people who were in debt to the lord ad cancelled a lot of the debt. The guy who owed a hundred measures of oil, now owed fifty, the guy who owed a hundred measures of wheat now owed eighty.
And the lord commended the steward, because he had been smart, the children of this generation in this world are wiser than the children of the light.
So I’m telling you be friends with the greedy, and unrighteous, so when you fail they will have you in their homes forever. If you are faithful in the least, you’ll be faithful in a lot, and if you are unjust in the least you will be unjust in a lot.
Sheesh no sliding scale there, I mean I may do something unscrupulous like take the extra $20 that an ATM spits out at me and be happy as a clam. When that bank teller gave me an extra $25 I pointed out the mistake. I mean seriously it doesn’t have to be one way of another.
Therefore if you haven’t been faithful to the unrighteous greedy, who will entrust you with the true riches? Wait what? Why would being faithful to the unrighteous greedy be a good thing that would earn someone’s trust in you If you haven’t been faithful with another man’s stuff, who are you going trust with your stuff?
No servant can serve two masters, because he’ll hate one and love the other, or he’ll cling to one and despise the other. Tell that to anyone who’s ever had more than one person as a superior in their workplace. You can’t serve God and mammon the god of greed, still not capitalized as a dist to the god mammon.
The Pharisees were just jealous; they heard all of these things and mocked him.
And he told them, you justify yourself before man, but God knows your heart, because that which is prized by man is an abomination in God’s eyes. I wish they had been more specific about that. I mean it could refer to money and power, or family, all are prized by men. The law and the prophet were until John, since the kingdom of God is preached and every man pressed into it. Okay... not sure what that meant, too drunk to figure it out, it’s easier for heaven and earth to pass than one speck of the law to fail.
Whoever leaves his wife and maries another is committing adultery, and whoever marries the wife he left is committing adultery, which is really fair to wife who was left. Because bad enough her husband left her, but what she’s just supposed to sit around and be miserable because her husband is off sinning? Sorry sweetie, you better learn to be happy on your own, because you’ll never get to be with another unless your adulterous husband comes back to you.
There was a certain rich man, that’s shot number three for those playing along with the bible drinking game, hiccough, who was wearing purple and fine linen, and ate sumptuously ever day. And there was a certain beggar names Lazarus, but not Mary and Martha’s brother Lazarus, who lay at his gate full of sores. He just wanted the crumbs from the rich man’s table, (funny how he gets a name but the rich man doesn’t) moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. Ewwwe. Dogs can be so gross sometimes!
Well as is his lot in life, Laz dies, but he gets carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also dies, death comes for us all, and he is buried. In hell, he lifts up his eyes while he’s being tormented, and sees Abraham far off holding Lazarus t his bosom. He cried out Father Abraham have mercy on me, send Lazarus so he can dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. These flames are torturing me!
Abraham said, son, remember that you received a ton of good stuff in life, and Lazarus had evil things happen to him. But now he’s comforted and you are tormented! There is a great gulf between us, so we can’t come to you and you can’t come to us.
The rich guy says, please send Lazarus to my father’s house, I have five brethren, and if he talks to them, maybe they won’t end up in a hell like me. Ah that’s really nice of the rich guy. See he’s not all bad. Oh wait… I have a bad feeling about this, because clearly this guy loves his family and we all know how JC feels about that.
Abraham tells him, they have Moses and prophets to guide them.
The rich guy answers, no father Abraham, they would repent if you sent someone back from the grave.
Abraham tells him if they didn’t hear Moses and prophets, they won’t be persuaded by someone coming back from the dead. I would think JC would want to argue opposite that point as part of his big shtick is coming back from the dead to prove an immortal afterlife and all of that. It’s a big part of his proof that’s he’s God’s son.

John Chapter 15
John Chapter 15
Jesus tells us that he is the true fine and his dad is the husbandman (I think that’s the caretaker). Every branch on the vine that doesn’t bear fruit gets taken away (watch your toes JC), and every branch that bears fruit gets purged so it can grow more fruit (I assume, in this case purging is picking the fruit).
JC tells us to live in him and he’ll live in you. The branch cannot bear fruit by itself except that it is part of the vine, that’s why you can’t unless you believe in Jesus. Now, in case you missed it, he’s the vine and you’re the branches. If you believe in him, he’ll be inside of you and this wonderful duo will be able to create a load of fruit, but without him you can’t do anything.
If a man doesn’t believe in Jesus he is pruned and will wither. Other men will gather them up and throw them into the fire to be burned.
By bearing loads of fruit you glorify his dad, and JC’s disciples who follow this message will also be glorified. Just like JC’s dad loved him, JC loved his disciples, he instructs them to continue in secure knowledge of his love.
More on keeping his commandments, the jist of which has been gone over and over and over in past chapters and no longer bears repeating.
He tells them again to love one another as he has loved them. He says that no man has greater love than one who would lay down his life for his friends. (Awwww! That’s wicked sweet!) But, you’re only JC’s friends if you do what he commands. (I’ve tried to make friends that way before… very ineffective strategy, you have to treat people nicely or they won’t like you).
He promotes them from servants to friends. (That’s good, I think). He also tells them that they didn’t chose him, but he chose them and ordained them so they could bring forth fruit and that their fruit should remain, and anything they ask his dad in his name will be given to them.
He repeats a command to love each other. When the world hates them, they should remember that it hated JC first (mmm, how comforting).
He reminds them that the servant is not greater than the lord (okay, I’m so sick of this classist baloney talk, but even more than that… did he or did he not a mere 5 verses ago… John 15:15, compared to what I’m discussing now which is John 20:20… tell them they were NOT servants any longer). Anyway, because of this logic, if they persecute JC, they’ll persecute the disciples… (eh, fair enough). However, if they keep his sayings then they’ll also keep the disciples.
Anything they do to the disciples is because they don’t know JC’s dad. If he hadn’t come down they could still hide their sin, but because of him they have no cloak. Whoever hates JC hates his dad too. If he hadn’t done these amazing miraculous works that no other man could do then his persecutors would have no sin (wait… that’s weird, probably he means wouldn’t have had to confront their sins… I think), but now they have seen and hated him and his dad. But all this happened so that their own prophesies could be fulfilled, and the Spirit of Truth that JC’s dad sends will testify for him.
Oh, and all the disciples are now allowed to bear witness for him because they’ve been with him from the beginning.
Awesome.

Luke Chapter 15
All the publicans and sinners came to hear JC. Oh the Pharisees were certainly upset about that. He eats with the sinners and publicans. JC tells them…. a story, and analogy, another parable.
If a man has a hundred sheep, and he loses one, he leaves the ninety nine sheep in the wilderness and finds the lost one. Find he finds the lost sheep, he pick it up and rejoices. When he comes home he invites his friends and neighbors to celebrate having found the lost sheep.
It’s just like the joy in heaven when a sinner repents, its better than ninety nine people who don’t need to repent.
If a woman has ten pieces of silver and she loses one, she lights a candle and sweeps the house looking for it. When she finds it she invites her friends and neighbors over to share in her joy.
I’m telling you the angels will rejoice over the one sinner who repents.
And now JC tells us the story of the prodigal son.
A certain man had two sons. The younger son asked his father to give him his inheritance. He took all of his wealth and moved far away, wasting his money on riotous living! Sounds like fun! When he spent all the money, the land had a famine and he really began to suffer. He eventually got a job feeding pigs, and he would have been happy to eat the husks that the pigs ate but he was not given any food. He thought about how his father treated their servants, how they always had bread to spare. He was hungry.
He thought to himself, I’m going to go home. I’ll tell my dad I’ve sinned against heaven, and against you and I’m not worthy to be your son. Please hire me as a servant. As he came upon his old home his dad saw him. His dad recognized him from a great distance and immediately ran over hugging and kissing him. Awww… he’s a nice dad!
The son tells him I’m sorry dad, I sinned against heaven, and in your eyes and I’m not worthy to be your son. But the day loved him anyway and told his servants to bring the good robe, and ring and shoes. Kill the fatted calf, let us eat and be merry. My son was dead, and he is alive again, he was lost and now he’s found! And they began to make merry!
But his elder son was in the field and as he came home he heard the music and the dancing. He asked the servants what was going on. They told him his brother was home and they killed the fatted calf because he was home, safe and sound. Well the elder brother was pissed, and wouldn’t go celebrate. So his dad came out to talk to him.
His elder son told him, dad, I’ve been a good son who stayed and helped you, and never did anything against you. You never gave me even a goat to make merry with my friends. But the second my ne’er-do-well brother who spent all of the money you gave him, whoring about, comes home you kill the fatted calf!
And dad tells him, son, you have always been with me and all I have is yours. But you should make merry because your bother who was lost has been found, and who was dead was alive.
You know I’ve never minded that the prodigal son gets a big fuss made over him. But why didn’t the dad appreciate all that his good son had done. Where was his fatted calf? And did the dad ever learn to appreciate the good son? I mean I get it. Good people are going to be good whether you put the fear of god into them or not. Being good is supposedly its own reward. I get that they want to entice the people who aren’t being good to be better with stories of reward. But dude it’s just not fair. This story just goes to show, if are good even for its own reward, you will get taken advantage of. Oh sure good people might turn the other cheek, but friends, I don't care it's still not right.

John Chapter 14
John Chapter 14
Jesus says… don’t let your heart be troubled if you believe in god then you believe in me. (That is categorically untrue… think of all the people we’ve met in this tale who really do believe in God and don’t at all believe in JC).
In his dad’s house are many mansions (big house to contain mansions, perhaps he meant land), if it wasn’t true JC wouldn’t have said it. He’s going forth to prepare this place for everybody. (That’s nice of him). Once he prepares everything he’ll come again and personally escort them so they can all be together. Hurray! Then, when he goes they’ll know the way. Even better!
JC said to them that he is the way, the truth AND the life and nobody is getting in to see his daddy without going through him first. Again, if you know him, you know his dad and from now on they all know him and have seen him.
Philip asked him to show the Father, this would suffice for them.
Jesus didn’t like that. How can you not know me after so long together. If you’ve seen me you’ve seen the father. How can you ask me to show the Father. Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and his is in me? Also, when I speak they are not my words but his. Believe me when I tell you that I am in the Father and the Father is in me (I will beat this dead horse until it reunites with the ground, bam, bam, die hors that is already dead!), if you believe me for no other reason than believe in my works.
He continues (seemingly endlessly), he that believes in me will do the same works that I do and even greater works. It’s time for me to go to my dad. But I’ll do whatever you ask in my name and the my dad will be glorified in me. If you ask for something in my name, I’ll do it (that’s in case you missed it the first time he said it). If you love me keep my commandments. He’ll pray to his dad (can’t they just chat, he’s going to see him very shortly), and he will give you another Comforter (yup, capital “C”) and he can live with you forever.
JC continues to tell that this Comforter is the spirit of truth who you know and who dwells within you, even though the world cannot receive him because they can’t see or know him. Jesus promises not to leave them comfortless, he’s going to come to them.
But in a little while the world won’t see him anymore, but his friends will. He’s going to live forever and so will they. Anyone that keeps his commandments is someone who loves him. And what’s so special about that? Well, anyone who loves him is loved by god and JC and JC will show himself to that person.
The other Judas (not Iscariot) asked how JC planned on showing himself to them and not to the world at large.
Jesus told him that if a man loves him and keeps his words then his father will love him and both he and his dad will come to him and live with him. Whoever doesn’t love him won’t do what he says, even though those are his dad’s words not his. He’s told them all this before, JC says.
But the Comforter, who is also known as the Holy Ghost who god will send in JC’s name will teach them all things and help them remember everything he’s said to them.
Well, I’m off. I give you my peace. Don’t be troubled or afraid about this, he tells them. You’ve all heard what I’ve said, I’m going away but I’ll come to you again. If you loved me you would rejoice because I’m going to see my dad who is even better than me (but is sometimes the same person and sometimes not).
Jesus says that he told them all this before it happened so that they would believe. After this he’s not going to talk much with them. The prince of this world comes and has nothing in JC. (For your edification that line actually reads, “for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.”). But the world should know that Jesus loves his dad who gave him the commandment to do as he is doing.
Well, let’s be off, he says.
All I (Beth) can say is… I am so glad there are only 7 more chapters. The repetition is just incredible, and this gospel is so far from the others I can only imagine that if you are Christian you really have to pick which side of the fence you fall on , are you a Matthew/Mark/Luke type or a John believer?
